The Lincolnshire Chamber’s new Agriculture and Horticulture Chamber was launched on the 24th February 2011 from 10.00am, at Riseholme Campus, the University of Lincoln. The event was kindly sponsored by Roythornes Solicitors, one the UK's leading firms of agricultural solicitors - consistently rated as number one in the region for agriculture and estates by the Legal 500; and Duncan & Toplis Charted Accountants. Duncan & Toplis is one of the leading agricultural accountants in the country, providing tax planning and pro-active accounting solutions. The launch event was designed to help businesses in the agriculture and horticulture sector access a range of business tools and information to help their business grow.
Guest speakers at the event were Phil Cookson from Roythornes Solicitors, who informed delegates of the latest developments in health and safety legislation and employment law and explained how they related to the agriculture and horticulture sector. David Gratton from Duncan & Toplis presented on insights gained from his considerable experience in advising the agriculture sector and underlined the importance of planning to business finances and taxation.
Chris Moses, from Personnel Advice & Solutions Ltd, spoke about the increasing degree of unease amongst Farmers and Horticulturalists regarding the introduction of new legislation in 2011, and key legal changes affecting employers in agriculture and horticulture during 2011.
Steve Ward, from Uncle Henry's Farm Shop and Restaurant, spoke about Uncle Henry’s - the award winning modern stylish café and farm shop set in a picturesque farmyard - and also highlighted the trials, tribulations, and benefits of farm diversification.
Chief Inspector Mark Housley, from the Lincolnshire Police Rural Business Crime Unit, highlighted the activities of Lincolnshire Farm and Country Business Watch; a scheme designed to encourage people who live and work in the countryside to be vigilant and report anything suspicious to the police. One such activity has seen Lincolnshire Police promoting the use of Smartwater DNA marking on agricultural machinery, all of which was detailed in the presentation.
Diane Simpson from the e-Business Club was the final speaker, telling delegates about new funding available that allows eligible businesses to attend ICT training workshops and events free of charge. The e-Business Club is a virtual support network created to help businesses make the best use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to boost business performance. Workshops include topics such as planning a website, online marketing, social media, e-commerce, security, wireless and mobile working. These workshops and events help take the confusion out of ICT and help businesses to maximise the benefits of ICT to increase productivity.
The event also included a networking lunch, which gave delegates the opportunity to visit the exhibition stands.
